![]() On a terrace in front of the Adriatic Sea, amid the roofs of the historical center of San Benedetto del Tronto, live some of the most beautiful cactus specimens that I ever saw. Besides favoured by the mild climate these plants enjoy being grown by my friend Dante, who raised them all from seed and has that particular ability of staying tuned with them and understanding their needs. Since when we first met, in late 2007, we discovered a convergence of interest towards many species of cactus, which was further boosted by the numerous seedlings we exchanged along the way. ![]() I share with Dante the interest towards many species that are often ignored because felt as too common by hobbyists, that for plants which challenge the ability and patience of those who try to grow them, as well as the chronical lack of space, which we often lament in a continuously lost struggle to contain the proliferation of spines. Most of Dante' s plants live in full sun with their plastic cover removed in spring and receiving most of the water when it rains, in these conditions they grow healthy developing formidable spines and rewarding with spectacular flowers. ![]() A few specimens of rare cactus, often referred as delicate, are grown in the so called "rock garden" a very well drained spot which remains unprotected almost year around. While adding a new gallery with the pictures taken in spring 2008 and summer 2009, I realize that they cannot fully catch the beauty of what I saw, sure they cannot convey the harmony and the pleasure I felt spending a few hours together with my friend on a terrace full of wonders. Take a look at Dante's terrace
