Last spring I was enchanted by this plant when I saw it in full flower at a friend's nursery: the magnificent yellow flowers in full evidence against the bluish joints. According to Benson, the origin of the name is related to the purplish color of the joints during the winter season. Variety Santa-Rita is described as less spiny than the species. Here in Rome this plant can be grown outdoors year around and survive wet winters as well as pretty low temperatures.
